R.I.P. Ursula Le Guin

Author Ursula Le Guin is no longer with us.

One of the most poignant remembrances I’ve yet seen is by author Catherynne Valente on Twitter:

One of the many, many things Le Guin gave us was a subtle one: that the “science” in science fiction could also be the social sciences, and that, indeed, without it, no science fiction could be entirely complete

I’m most fond of Le Guin’s Earthsea stories, some of which I’ve read and re-read in Finnish and in English over the years. I’ve only managed one of her science fiction books so far, though. Time to rectify that.

Forever read, Ms. Le Guin. Your intellect, inner fire, and vision will be deeply missed.

I met her at a book signing once. I told her I was having trouble picking a fantasy novel to read because their descriptions on the book jackets were all the same. She told me that was because they were all the same, and recommended to me “The Wizard of Pigeons” for a different fantasy (which turned out to be more urban magical realism).
